40 mila chilometri e 40 paesi in 14 mesi. Questo il progetto di un gruppo di ricercatori svizzeri, i quali intendono portare la loro vettura solare in giro per il mondo, incontrando politici e amministratori locali. L'obiettivo è quello di sensibilizzare l'opinione pubblica sulle questioni ambientali. La vettura solare, che si chiama SolarTaxi, testata su un percorso di 3000 chilometri tra Svizzera e Spagna, e' partita per il suo lungo viaggio da Lucerna. E' ora arrivata a New York, dove si è fermata per ben 8 giorni. Dopo aver percorso 57 mila chilometri nel corso di un anno, la vettura ecologica dello scienziato svizzero Louis Palmer si avvia verso la conclusione del proprio viaggio, che la dovrebbe condurre, nei prossimi mesi, di nuovo in Europa.
Dall'Australia la vettura di Palmer ha raggiunto Cina e Malaysia, da dove si è spostata verso Malibù, in California, alla "conquista" degli Stati Uniti d'America. Tutto questo alla velocità di 55 miglia orarie, circa 90 chilometri orari.
L'obiettivo di Solar Taxi è evidentemente sensibilizzare le persone, in ogni luogo dove fa tappa, sulle tematiche legate alla mobilità sostenibile.
Per fare questo l'autovettura ha spesso ospitato vip e personalità, che l'hanno anche guidata, come ad esempio il regista James Cameron.

Energy Concept: how is it possible to power a car with the sun?
The Solartaxi is an electric vehicle with a five-meter solar trailer covered with 6 square meters of solar cells. The electricity is stored in a newly invented ZEBRA battery, so we can even drive at night, without any sunshine. The solar cells on the trailer produce enough electricity to run the car up to 100 km a day.
If we need to drive more than 100 km a day, we need to charge our battery with additional solar power. For this purpose, we have a solar power plant on a rooftop in Berne, Switzerland. This electricity is fed into the grid, offsetting electricity generated by using fossil fuels. It's like paying money into a bank account and withdrawing the money somewhere else: We feed solar electricity into the grid and charge it into our battery anywhere in the world, from the grid. If all cars in the world were powered this way, cars wouldn't cause global warming!
Solar mobility is the way to go! The Solartaxi demonstrates how it is possible to produce enough electricity with a mere 9 sqare meters of solar cells on a rooftop to drive 15'000 km a year!
